Finding out you are unexpectedly pregnant can bring on some stress and unexpected emotions into your life. You may be wondering what next steps to take, and although an abortion pill may seem less stressful, quick and private, it does skip important health screenings and you deserve to be informed of what this option can mean for your reproductive health.

Important Health Screenings

When using a mail order abortion pill medication, you are skipping the important screenings that in-person healthcare providers can offer. These include lab-quality pregnancy tests and ultrasounds. Your best first step is to confirm how long you have been pregnant.

At our pregnancy center you will receive no-cost pregnancy tests confirming the pregnancy and how far along you are, along with an ultrasound identifying the location of the pregnancy, to make sure the pregnancy is occurring in the uterus. A medical abortion does not impact pregnancies that are located outside the uterus such as an (ectopic pregnancy). An ectopic pregnancy requires immediate medical treatment.

Also, having an untreated Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) can make you ineligible for a medical abortion because this significantly increases your risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PID).

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill can also be called a medication abortion. This process utilizes two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. The purpose of the first medication, mifepristone, works by blocking the activity of progesterone, a substance your body makes to help continue pregnancy. Misoprostol is then taken afterwards to induce labor by contracting the uterus to expel the fetus.
